The “Lorsch Pharmacopoeia” is regarded as the earliest compendium of medical remedies from the Early Middle Ages in the Occident. Besides a comprehensive collection of pharmaceutical recipes the manuscript holds writings on the theory and practice of medicine. In the prominent foreword (foll. 1r-5r) an anonymous author justifies medicine as a gesture of ‘charity’. The codex, furthermore, contains numerous Old High German glosses and other additions attesting the intensive use of the codex in the 9th and 10th century; the manuscript gains an additional significance, in that on fol. 42v it contains a list of books held by Emperor Otto III. (996-1002).
On 18. June 2013 the manuscript was listed in the UNESCO Memory of the World Register.
